چکیده :
Background: Robot-assisted gait training using wearable exoskeletons enables intensive and repetitive rehabilitation; however, maintaining cognitive engagement during repetitive robotic walking remains a challenge. Integrating gamified tasks with robotic assistance may enhance cognitive involvement and promote more effective rehabilitation. Electroencephalography (EEG) provides a promising tool for monitoring cognitive engagement during locomotion. This study aims to examine the feasibility of EEG-based monitoring to assess cognitive responses during gamified robot-assisted walking. Methods: EEG signals were recorded from a healthy adult participant during three treadmill-walking conditions: free walking (W), robotic-assisted walking with a hip exoskeleton (RW), and robotic-assisted walking combined with an interactive video game (RGW). EEG preprocessing included filtering, rereferencing, artifact removal using Artifact Subspace Reconstruction and Independent Component Analysis, and noise suppression. Spectral power, frequency band ratios, and functional connectivity were analyzed to examine task-related changes in neural activity associated with cognitive processing. Findings: The gamified robotic walking condition showed increased Theta power, decreased Alpha power, and higher engagement-related band ratios compared to robotic-assisted and free walking. The frontal-Theta-to-parietal-Alpha ratio increased during gamified walking, indicating elevated cognitive engagement. Connectivity analysis revealed enhanced interregional coupling in Theta frequencies and task-specific modulation of neural networks during robotic and gamified walking. Conclusion: This case study demonstrates the feasibility of EEG-based monitoring for assessing cognitive responses during robot-assisted and gamified locomotion. Gamified robotic walking appears to engage cognitive networks more strongly than robotic assistance alone, highlighting the potential of integrating neurophysiological monitoring into adaptive rehabilitation systems.
