چکیده
Introduction: Perceived social support has been widely described as a protective factor against psychological difficulties during pregnancy (1), although evidence on its relationship with symptom severity remains inconsistent (2, 3). This study examined the association of perceived social support with the severity of pregnancy symptoms among pregnant women in Tabriz. Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled 302 pregnant women with a gestational age of 12 weeks or more, attending health centers in Tabriz in 2022. Pregnancy symptoms were measured with the Pregnancy Symptoms Inventory (PSI) (4), and Perceived social support was measured with the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) (5). Findings: The mean pregnancy symptom score (range 0-123) was 29.3 (SD 14.5), and the mean social support score (range 12-84) was 60.0 (SD 12.5). No significant association was found between total social support and total symptom scores (r=0.01, p=0.813), and this held across the psychological, physical, and functional-limitation subscales. Conclusion: In this population, perceived social support was not a significant predictor of pregnancy symptom severity. The relatively high mean support score observed may have restricted the variability needed to detect an association; examining more specific dimensions of support in more diverse populations is recommended.
