Integration of Infection Prevention and Control into Structured Nursing Handover for Patient Safety and Health Service Transformation: A Scoping Review

چکیده
Background: Nursing handover is an essential component of safe and continuous patient care. Inadequate transfer of clinical information can contribute to communication failures, preventable errors, delayed interventions, and compromised patient safety. Although structured nursing handover has been widely studied, the integration of infection prevention and control (IPC) components into this process has received comparatively less attention. Incorporating IPC-related information into nursing handover may provide an opportunity to improve the quality, safety, and continuity of healthcare services. Method: This scoping review will be conducted based on the updated JBI guidance and the PRISMAـScR framework. PubMed, Scopus, and web of science will be searched for studies published from 2016 to 2026 studies which Search terms included combinations of “nursing handover,” “nursing handoff,” “shift report,” “infection prevention,” “infection control,” “patient safety,” and “quality of care.” Studies addressing nursing handover and incorporating infection prevention, patient safety, or quality-of-care components in hospital or acute-care settings were considered eligible. Relevant studies were screened and selected according to predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Finding: Of 113 records identify through the database search, 31 studies met the eligibility criteria and were included in the final review. The findings indicated that structured nursing handover can improve the consistency and completeness of clinical information transfer and support patient safety and continuity of care. The identified evidence also suggested that incorporating IPC-related information, including infection risks, isolation precautions, invasive devices, and antimicrobial stewardship considerations, may strengthen handover as a proactive patient safety process. However, studies specifically addressing the integration of IPC into nursing handover were limited and heterogeneous. Conclusion: Integrating infection prevention and control components into structured nursing handover represents a potentially valuable approach to transforming routine nursing communication into a standardized and risk-oriented process. Further research is needed to develop and evaluate evidence-based handover models that simultaneously address patient safety, infection prevention, and continuity of care
