چکیده
Background: Post-disaster mental health problems can persist long after major events such as the Kermanshah earthquake, one of Iran’s largest recent earthquakes, making them a serious public health concern. This study aimed to identify the psychological consequences and health-related relief needs of the survivors. Method: In this scoping review, keywords related to the Kermanshah earthquake and mental health were used with appropriate Boolean operators. A search was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases for the period from 2017 to 2026. Full-text studies related the Kermanshah earthquake and its health consequences were included in this research, while studies related to other disasters, purely geological and engineering discussions, reports lacking methodology, and duplicate articles were excluded from the review process. A total of 1045 articles were initially retrieved. After removing duplicates and applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 60 relevant articles were identified. Following independent full-text screening by two researchers and resolution of discrepancies by a third researcher, 14 articles were selected for final analysis. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings: The findings were categorized into two axes: consequences and the needs and challenges of mental health. The consequences included sleep disorders and insomnia, depression, PTSD symptoms, post-traumatic dissociation, experiential avoidance, suicidal thoughts, substance use tendencies, behavioral problems, feelings of insecurity, and disruption in place attachment. Needs and challenges included a shortage of psychologists, the need for early screening and interventions, psychological support, and attention to the needs of survivors, children, women, and staff and rescuers. Conclusion: Strengthening early screening, developing mental health services, and addressing the psychological needs of various groups can play a role in improving the response to mental health outcomes after disasters.
