Aromatherapy in Iranian Cancer Patients: A Systematic Review
نویسندگان

چکیده
Background: Cancer, a major 21st-century challenge, causes significant mortality. Chemotherapy's side effects include fatigue, nausea, vomiting, insomnia, anxiety, and depression. Aromatherapy, a safe, cost-effective complementary therapy, is widely investigated by Iranian nurse researchers to manage these symptoms. This study aimed to review research on aromatherapy in Iranian cancer patients. Method: This study is a systematic review of national studies. The search was conducted in September 2025 using keywords and MeSH terms related to aromatherapy and cancer in the PubMed, Google Scholar, Magiran, and SID databases without any time limitation. Of the 79 retrieved articles, duplicates, reviews, and irrelevant studies were excluded. Two researchers independently reviewed the articles, and after screening, selection, and quality assessment using JBI checklists, 14 interventional studies evaluating aromatherapy's effects in cancer patients were included. Finding: This systematic review found that inhalation aromatherapy reduced chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, sleep disturbances, pain, and depression, while improving patients' quality of life. In Iran, lavender and rose essential oils were commonly used. Other essential oils included peppermint, orange, cardamom, cinnamon, lemon, viola, and almond. While inhalation aromatherapy reduced radiotherapy-related fatigue, combining it with massage was more effective, suggesting that integrating both methods could enhance positive outcomes for patients. Aromatherapy combined with massage alleviated physical symptoms (low back pain, tingling, nausea, and vomiting) and psychological issues (anxiety, insomnia, and depression), and improved self-care, daily functioning, and return to work. Conclusion: Aromatherapy, a simple, safe, and cost-effective complementary therapy, may help manage symptoms in cancer patients. Nurse education through in-service training programs may facilitate the integration of aromatherapy into clinical care and increase patients' and families' awareness of its safe and effective use at home.
