چکیده
Background: Body malodor is largely related to bacterial transformation of otherwise low-odor skin secretions, and deodorants are intended to reduce this process [1,2]. Interest in plant-based deodorants has increased because several botanical extracts show antimicrobial activity. Sage has previously been evaluated in a stick deodorant formulation [3], while antimicrobial activity has also been reported for Lippia citriodora [4]. This study aimed to formulate and evaluate a herbal deodorant stick containing sage, rosemary, and lemon verbena extracts. Method: Hydroalcoholic plant extracts were prepared and standardized using spectrophotometric assessment of polyphenolic/tannin-related constituents. Antibacterial activity was evaluated using broth dilution and complementary diffusion testing against odor-associated skin microorganisms. Multiple stick formulations were prepared by varying base components and extract proportions. Candidate formulations were assessed for physicochemical properties, stability, uniformity, spreadability, sweating, wrinkling, melting point, pH, extract release, and user acceptability. Finding: The extract showed measurable polyphenolic content, and antibacterial testing yielded a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 3.27 mg/mL and a minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of 12.78 mg/mL. Among 16 formulations, formulation 16 was selected as the final formulation. Its melting point remained approximately 57.2-57.5°C during follow-up, while the pH of a 10% stick solution remained approximately 7.75-7.89. About 75% of the extract was released within 30 minutes and 80% within 40 minutes. No major changes in appearance, odor, texture, or thermal stability were reported during the evaluated storage period. Conclusion: A stick formulation containing sage, rosemary, and lemon verbena extracts demonstrated antibacterial activity and acceptable physicochemical stability. The findings support further optimization and controlled clinical evaluation of herbal deodorant formulations, particularly combinations enriched in tannin-containing extracts.
