Bioactive Moringa oleifera-Loaded Scaffolds in Advanced Wound Care: Current Evidence, Mechanisms, and Therapeutic Prospects

چکیده :

Background: Wound healing represents a complex process that encompasses four stages, including hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. Disruptions within any one of these processes can lead to pathological scarring (1). Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) possess biocompatibility and abundant surface functional groups, making them suitable candidates for wound healing (2). This review highlights recent findings regarding the potential biological functions of CQDs for wound healing. Method: A narrative review was conducted by searching PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science up to June 2026. The search strategy employed a combination of keywords including wound healing. Finding: Recent findings suggest that CQDs possess diverse biological activities that may modulate various aspects of tissue repair (2). Surface modification of CQDs may enhance their free radical scavenging capacity and reduce oxidative damage, while also suppressing pro-inflammatory mediators such as TNF-α. These effects may accelerate the transition from inflammation to tissue regeneration (3). Studies have shown that CQDs exhibit antibacterial activity, either by disrupting cell membrane integrity, generating photoactivated ROS, or interfering with microbial metabolism (4). CQDs can be incorporated into scaffolds to promote mechanical strength, water retention, and swelling capacity, and enabling monitoring of drug release rates (5). Conclusion: CQDs represent a new class of nanocarriers that may address major challenges in wound healing, such as oxidative stress, microbial infections, and impaired cellular functions.
