Effectiveness of Novel Rehabilitation Therapies in Neurological Patients: Technology-Enabled Recovery Within Multidisciplinary Clinical Care

Neurological disorders such as stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), Parkinson’s disease (PD), and multiple sclerosis (MS) remain major causes of long-term disability and reduced quality of life worldwide. Across these conditions, rehabilitation is essential for preserving function, restoring independence, and supporting community reintegration. However, conventional rehabilitation pathways often struggle with limited treatment intensity, variable access, and resource constraints, particularly during long-term follow-up. In response, emerging rehabilitation technologies including robotic-assisted devices, virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR), non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS), and telerehabilitation platforms have increasingly been introduced into clinical practice. The clinical value of these technologies depends less on novelty alone and more on how they are integrated into multidisciplinary care. Current evidence suggests that robotic and VR-based interventions can improve motor performance and selected functional outcomes, especially after stroke, when used as adjuncts to therapist-guided rehabilitation rather than replacements for it. NIBS modalities such as transcranial direct current stimulation and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation may provide modest gains in motor recovery in selected patients, but results remain heterogeneous and protocol-sensitive. Telerehabilitation has emerged as a particularly important strategy for continuity of care, showing comparable outcomes to in-person rehabilitation for some post-stroke outcomes while improving access and adherence in geographically or mobility-limited populations. At the same time, important limitations remain heterogeneous intervention protocols, inconsistent outcome measures, uncertain long-term durability, cost and infrastructure barriers, and unequal implementation across healthcare systems. This review examines the effectiveness of novel rehabilitation therapies through an integrated clinical lens, emphasizing the conditions under which technology meaningfully enhances rehabilitation outcomes. The central argument is that the most consistent gains are observed when emerging tools are embedded in individualized, multidisciplinary rehabilitation models with clear therapeutic goals, progression plans, and follow-up pathways.
