Marine Bioactive Peptides: Extraction, Structure-Activity Relationships, and Novel Therapeutic Applications

چکیده :

Background: Marine bioactive peptides (MBPs) have emerged as promising therapeutic agents due to their unique structural diversity and multifunctional bioactivities. The marine environment hosts extraordinary biodiversity producing peptides with antioxidant, antihypertensive, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities (1, 2). Method: A comprehensive literature review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Studies published between 2021 and 2026 on marine-derived bioactive peptides, extraction methods, structure-activity relationships, and therapeutic applications were included (3, 4). Finding: MBPs typically consist of 2-20 amino acid residues and are obtained from fish, mollusks, crustaceans, algae, and marine by-products through enzymatic hydrolysis, microbial fermentation, or gastrointestinal digestion. Short-chain peptides (<1 kDa) show superior bioactivity (4, 5). Conclusion: MBPs represent a sustainable source of therapeutic agents for pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, and functional foods. Challenges including scalable production, standardization, and clinical validation remain. Future research should focus on structure-activity relationships, in vivo efficacy, and delivery systems (1, 3).
