چکیده :
Aims: Given the increasing prevalence of infertility and advances in assisted reproductive technologies, surrogacy has become an increasingly important treatment option for infertility worldwide. Commercial surrogacy is reportedly the most common form of surrogacy practiced in Iran. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the motivations of Iranian women for becoming surrogate mothers. Methods: This qualitative study used conventional content analysis. The participants comprised 28 individuals: 9 surrogate mothers, 1 husband of a surrogate mother, 1 intended mother, 12 healthcare providers, and 5 maternal health experts. Surrogate mothers were purposively selected using maximum-variation sampling from clients attending infertility treatment centers in Isfahan. Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews conducted over one or two sessions lasting 40-60 minutes. Sampling continued until data saturation was reached. Data were analyzed using the method proposed by Graneheim and Lundman. Findings: Three main categories emerged: financial need, altruism, and charitable and spiritual motives. Poverty, husbands’ unemployment counseling in this field should therefore recognize the multilayered nature of these motivations. Debt, and financial hardship were the primary motivations. Helping infertile couples, making others happy, seeking spiritual reward, and earning lawful income also provided meaning and legitimacy to the experience. Conclusion: The motivations of Iranian women for becoming surrogate mothers are multidimensional. Although financial need appears to play a central role, other motivations-including religious and spiritual beliefs, altruism, and sacrificial motives-also contribute to the decision. Policymaking and clinical counseling in this field should therefore recognize the multilayered nature of these motivations.
