چکیده :
Abstract Background: Microplastics are emerging contaminants that have raised serious concerns about reproductive health due to their widespread presence in the environment and the human body. These plastic particles enter the body through various pathways and have been detected in tissues such as the placenta. Given the increasing plastic pollution, investigating the effects of microplastics on the fetus and mother is crucial. Methods: This review study examined articles published between 2018 and 2025 in reputable databases including PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Science Direct, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. 20 eligible studies were included after systematic search and screening, with data extracted for analysis. Results: The main route of exposure to microplastics is oral, and these particles are able to cross both the intestinal barrier and even the placenta. These particles adversely affect the developing fetus, leading to adverse birth outcomes, placental dysfunction, and unfavorable immune responses. Furthermore, microplastics are associated with endocrine disruption, oxidative stress, and damage to the uterus and placenta, increasing the risk of miscarriage, fetal growth restriction, and preterm birth. Postnatal exposure in neonates can also disrupt organ development. Conclusion: Strong evidence indicates that the human fetus is exposed to microplastics, which can result in adverse health outcomes. Understanding the toxicological and health effects of these particles and implementing public health interventions to prevent their complications on the fetus and mother is vital.
