The Effectiveness of Mentalization-Based Therapy on Emotional Adjustment Dimensions in Individuals with Asthma

چکیده :

Aims: Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease that, in addition to physical symptoms, is associated with emotional and psychological difficulties. Mentalization-based therapy, by enhancing the understanding of mental states and emotion regulation, may contribute to improving patients’ psychological adaptation. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of mentalization-based therapy on emotional adjustment dimensions in individuals with asthma. Methods: This quasi-experimental study employed a pretest-posttest follow-up design with a control group. Thirty-six individuals with asthma referred to specialized centers in Isfahan were selected through convenience sampling and randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. The experimental group received 12 sessions of mentalization-based therapy. Data were collected using the Emotional Adjustment Measure and analyzed using repeated-measures analysis of variance. Findings: The findings indicated that the time × group interaction effect on emotional adjustment and its components, including lack of regulation of emotional and physiological arousal and hopelessness and wishful thinking, was significant (P < 0.001). Moreover, the experimental group showed significant improvements in emotional adjustment compared with the control group at both posttest and follow-up stages. Conclusion: Mentalization-based therapy can improve emotional adjustment in individuals with asthma by strengthening emotion recognition and regulation abilities. Therefore, this approach may be considered as a complementary psychological intervention alongside medical treatments for patients with chronic respiratory diseases.
