چکیده :
Background: Patient safety is a fundamental principle of healthcare and a key determinant of care quality, defined as the prevention and reduction of harm during healthcare delivery (1). Nurses, as the largest group of healthcare providers, play a critical role in ensuring patient safety, particularly in intensive care units where the complexity of patients' conditions and the high-stress environment increase the risk of errors (2). Despite advances in healthcare technology, medical errors remain a leading cause of patient morbidity worldwide. Understanding nurses' contributions to patient safety is essential for developing effective strategies to enhance care quality (3). This review study aims to comprehensively examine the role of nurses in improving patient safety and quality of clinical care. Method: This study is a review article conducted by searching reputable databases including PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, SID, and Magiran from January 2016 to January 2026. The search employed keywords such as patient safety, quality of care, nurses, and intensive care unit. From 247 initially identified articles, after screening and applying inclusion criteria, 5 most relevant articles were selected for comprehensive content analysis. Finding: The reviewed studies revealed several important findings. First, patient safety competency in nurses is significantly associated with improved quality of nursing care, with higher competency levels predicting better patient outcomes (1). Second, structured educational interventions, particularly training in the SBAR communication technique, significantly enhanced nurses' clinical decision-making abilities and reduced miscommunication-related errors (2). Third, overall compliance with safety standards by nurses in intensive care units was suboptimal, with an average adherence rate of only 43.53 out of 100, indicating a substantial gap between protocols and practice (3). ourth, patient safety culture operates at three interconnected levels: individual (knowledge, skills, professional values), interpersonal (communication within and between departments), and organizational (supportive management, equipment safety, workload, empowerment) (4). Fifth, a significant positive relationship was observed between nurses' teamwork and patient safety outcomes; units with stronger teamwork culture had lower rates of adverse events and medication errors (5). Conclusion: The role of nurses in improving patient safety and quality of clinical care is multidimensional and vital. Key strategies include improving patient safety competency through targeted education, implementing effective communication techniques such as SBAR, fostering positive teamwork culture, ensuring appropriate nurse-to-patient ratios to reduce workload, empowering staff through professional development, and adopting a systemic approach to error management. Healthcare organizations should invest in regular training courses, conduct periodic safety audits, and create environments that encourage open communication about errors. By implementing these evidence-based strategies, healthcare systems can significantly enhance nursing care quality, reduce preventable harm, and improve patient outcomes.
