چکیده :
Background: Growth and development are influenced by numerous factors, among which sleep plays a significant role. Sleep problems, whether in quantity (such as total sleep duration) or quality (such as frequent awakenings), result in inadequate sleep. Findings suggest that sleep in the first months of life is significantly associated with physical growth. This study aimed to determine the relationship between sleep and Body Mass Index (BMI) during the first six months of life in infants visiting selected health centers in the year 2024. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study used a convenient sampling method with a sample size of 128 infants aged six months or younger who attended selected health centers in 2024. A prepared questionnaire was adapted from the validated BISQ-R (Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire – Revised) and was structured using the CDC’s age-based normal sleep duration chart. BMI was calculated and using the WHO BMI-for-age percentile chart for children under two years (differentiated by gender). Results: The results showed that lower total sleep and daytime sleep were associated with higher BMI, while longer nighttime sleep was also associated with higher BMI. Infants who took more than 30 minutes to fall asleep or had other disturbances were more likely to be overweight or obese. However, nighttime awakenings had no statistically significant relationship with BMI. Conclusion: The study found a significant link between infants' sleep and BMI: shorter total and daytime sleep were associated with higher BMI, while longer nighttime sleep was also linked to higher BMI.
