Interdisciplinary ICU Care and Critical Outcomes: Evidence-Based Team Models for Safer, More Effective Intensive Care

Interdisciplinary care has become a defining feature of high-quality intensive care unit (ICU) practice because critically ill patients require rapid decisions across multiple domains, including hemodynamic support, ventilation, medication management, nutrition, rehabilitation, and communication with families. In this context, care quality depends not only on individual clinician expertise but also on how effectively teams coordinate their work. This narrative review examines contemporary evidence on the role of interdisciplinary care in improving outcomes for ICU patients, with emphasis on structured multidisciplinary rounds, interprofessional communication, pharmacist participation, and shared decision-making processes. Evidence from cohort studies, systematic reviews, and professional recommendations indicates that ICUs using organized interdisciplinary models generally demonstrate better process reliability and, in some settings, improved patient outcomes such as lower mortality, shorter length of stay, fewer preventable complications, and stronger adherence to evidence-based practices. Pharmacist participation in ICU teams has been associated with improved medication safety and favorable clinical outcomes, while communication-focused interventions support clearer goal setting and more consistent implementation of treatment plans. At the same time, the evidence base remains uneven. Many studies are observational, interventions are heterogeneous, and team composition varies substantially across hospitals and regions. Organizational hierarchy, unclear role expectations, staffing shortages, and limited training in interprofessional communication continue to hinder implementation. Future progress will require rigorous multicenter evaluations of specific team interventions, standardized measures linking team performance to patient outcomes, and implementation strategies adaptable to different ICU contexts. Overall, interdisciplinary care is not simply a workflow preference but a core clinical strategy for improving safety, coordination, and outcome quality in critically ill patients.
