The Effectiveness of Emotional Schema Therapy on Impulsivity and self-injurious behaviors in Adolescent Girls with Self-Injurious Behavior and Suicidal Ideation Referred to Counseling Centers in Isfahan

Abstract: The present study examined the effectiveness of Emotional Schema Therapy (EST) in reducing impulsivity and self-injurious behaviors among adolescent girls with a history of self-injury and suicidal ideation referred to counseling centers in Isfahan, Iran. Using a pretest-posttest control-group design with a 45-day follow-up, 30 participants were recruited through purposive sampling and randomly assigned to an intervention (n = 15) or control group (n = 15). The intervention group received nine weekly 60-minute group sessions of EST based on Leahy’s (2015) protocol, while the control group received no intervention. Data were collected using the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale and the Self-Harm Inventory and analyzed using repeated-measures analysis of variance and Bonferroni post hoc tests. Results indicated that participants receiving EST showed significant reductions in both impulsivity and self-injurious behaviors compared with the control group, with improvements maintained at the 45-day follow-up. These findings suggest that EST may be an effective intervention for addressing these behaviors among adolescent girls with self-injury and suicidal ideation.   Keywords: Emotional Schema Therapy; impulsivity; self-injurious behavior; suicidal ideation; adolescents
