چکیده :
Background: Nurses are one of the largest groups of healthcare providers and often serve as responders in earthquakes. The 2017 Kermanshah earthquake in Iran placed significant demands on nurses. This scoping review aims to describe the role of nurses in this incident. Method: This scoping review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science to identify studies published between 2017 and 2026. Studies were eligible if they were published in English, focused on Kermanshah earthquake, and addressed nurses. Studies were excluded if they examined other earthquakes, or focused exclusively on engineering, structural, or geological aspects, review articles, editorials, conference abstracts, and letters to the editor. Following screening of titles, abstracts, and full texts, 6 studies met the inclusion criteria. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis to identify key themes related to nurses’ competencies, challenges, and lived experiences. Finding: Studies were based on interviews. Findings fell into four categories: (1) competencies and ethical care, including clinical, personal, and ethical competence and respect for patients’ dignity and spiritual needs; (2) challenges in care delivery, namely organizational, human resource, infrastructure, and educational gaps; (3) disaster preparedness, with evidence of insufficient preparedness; and (4) personal impacts on nurses, both positive, such as professional maturity and negative like psychological trauma. Overall, nurses were portrayed as committed responders whose capacity was limited by weak preparedness and organizational support. Conclusion: : Nurses play a central role in earthquake response, and their preparedness may benefit from disaster-focused education, regular drills, and organizational and psychological support.
