Bridging the Gap: Understanding Adult Learners' Fear of AI in Language Classrooms and How to Overcome It

چکیده :
This study explores the psychological and pedagogical challenges adult language learners face when encountering artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in educational settings. A total of 150 adult learners aged 45 to 65 from Isfahan language institutes participated in interviews and filled out personality questionnaires, including the Big Five Inventory. The research investigates the relationship between personality traits and acceptance of AI, as well as learners' expectations and comfort levels. Results indicate that over 76% of participants preferred traditional, non-technological classroom settings, citing concerns over complexity, lack of human interaction, and unfamiliarity with digital tools. However, personality traits such as agreeableness and openness correlated positively with receptivity to AI, whereas neuroticism and conscientiousness appeared to hinder engagement. The findings highlight the importance of personalized AI integration strategies that consider individual differences, gradual exposure, and supportive instructional environments.
