Marine-Derived Probiotics: From Microbiome to Human Health

چکیده :

Background: Marine-derived probiotics have emerged as promising therapeutic agents due to their unique adaptations to extreme marine environments. These microorganisms produce diverse bioactive compounds with antimicrobial, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and anticancer activities (1, 2). Method: A comprehensive literature review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. Studies published between 2021 and 2026 focusing on marine-derived probiotics, their isolation, characterization, safety assessment, and therapeutic applications were included (3, 4). Finding: Marine probiotics, including Lactobacillus, Bacillus, Pseudoalteromonas, Enterococcus, and marine yeasts, exhibit remarkable salt tolerance and gastrointestinal survival. These strains demonstrate broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against multidrug-resistant pathogens through bacteriocin production, organic acid synthesis, and biofilm disruption. Marine probiotics modulate host immune responses by regulating pro-inflammatory cytokines, enhancing mucin expression, and activating antimicrobial peptides. Whole-genome sequencing has confirmed their safety by revealing the absence of virulence factors and transferable antibiotic resistance genes. Preclinical studies have demonstrated their efficacy in treating inflammatory bowel disease, sepsis, and colorectal cancer (5). Conclusion: Marine-derived probiotics represent a sustainable source of therapeutic agents with multifaceted applications in functional foods, pharmaceuticals, and aquaculture. However, challenges including scalable production, standardization, and clinical validation remain. Future research should focus on large-scale production, mechanistic studies, and clinical trials (2, 4).
