From Daily Challenges to Shared Resilience: Digital Narratives of Iranian Mothers Caring for Children with Type 1 Diabetes

Background: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) in children imposes substantial emotional, social, and economic burdens on families, particularly mothers who undertake continuous caregiving responsibilities. Emerging evidence suggests that digital peer-support communities may enhance parental self-efficacy, reduce isolation, and complement clinical diabetes education (1, 2). This study aimed to explore the digital narratives of Iranian mothers caring for children with T1D and identify pathways toward shared resilience. Methods: A qualitative study using conventional content analysis based on Graneheim and Lundman’s approach was conducted (3). A total of 650 sequential messages from three Eitaa-based peer-support channels for families of children with T1D were anonymously analyzed between April and July 2026. Data were examined through meaning unit identification, condensation, coding, and development of categories and themes. Findings: Four themes emerged: (1) informational uncertainty and the search for practical knowledge, (2) emotional burden and the need for connection, (3) rebuilding confidence through digital narratives, and (4) structural and economic barriers beyond peer support. Digital interactions enabled mothers to transform individual experiences into collective knowledge and shared resilience. However, unequal access to diabetes technologies and financial constraints remained persistent challenges (4, 5). Conclusion: Digital narratives represent a valuable complementary approach to family-centered diabetes care. Nurses and diabetes educators can leverage culturally responsive online peer-support strategies to strengthen caregiver empowerment, facilitate knowledge exchange, and advocate for equitable access to diabetes resources.
