چکیده :
Background: Clinical errors and patient safety incidents can affect healthcare professionals and contribute to the second-victim phenomenon.(1) Nurses may experience anxiety, guilt, emotional distress, and negative professional outcomes following adverse events. (1) Inadequate support may hinder recovery. (2, 3) This review aimed to synthesize evidence on nurses’ psychological and professional consequences, support needs, and organizational strategies for recovery and psychological safety. Methods: A narrative review was conducted to synthesize English-language evidence published from 2020 to 2026. Searches were performed in PubMed, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect in 2026 using combinations of “second victim” with nursing and patient safety terms; relevant MeSH terms were also used in PubMed. Original studies and relevant evidence syntheses were considered. Records were screened by abstract, followed by full-text assessment of potentially relevant articles, and duplicates were removed. Findings were narratively synthesized into three domains: psychological and professional consequences, support needs and coping, and organizational strategies for recovery and psychological safety. Findings: Nurses experienced emotional distress, anxiety, guilt, and difficulties in professional functioning following adverse events. (3) A qualitative meta-synthesis of 21 studies involving 272 nurses identified post-incident disequilibrium, barriers to support, and varied coping and recovery processes as key aspects of the second-victim experience. (3) Support needs varied according to event-related, work-related, psychological, and sociodemographic factors. (2) Greater second-victim experiences were associated with stronger intentions to leave the profession. (4) Peer and psychological support, psychological safety, and just-culture approaches may support recovery. (3, 5) Conclusion: The second-victim phenomenon has important psychological and professional consequences for nurses. (1, 3) Accessible support and a supportive organizational culture may facilitate recovery. (2, 3) Healthcare organizations should consider structured, multilevel support following patient safety incidents to support nurses’ well-being and recovery. (3, 5)
