The main risk factors associated with Alzheimer’s Disease

چکیده :

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most crucial neurodegenerative diseases in the aged society. AD affects 27 million people worldwide (1). AD is the most prevalent form of dementia worldwide in the elderly and is estimated to be 60-80% of cases (2).Some studies reported several modifiable and unmodifiable risk factors for AD. Unmodifiable risk factors are associated with age, APOE4 and family history (3). Modifiable risk factors of AD include physical activity, cardiovascular disease risk factors (diabetes, obesity, smoking and hypertension), healthy diet, education, social and cognitive engagement, and traumatic brain injury(4,5). This review aims to synthesize the current understanding of these interconnected risk factors to highlight opportunities for early prevention and risk mitigation. Method: A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, CINAHL and Web of Science to identify articles published in the last 10 years on Alzheimer’s disease risk factors. Search terms included combinations of Alzheimer’s disease, risk factors, dementia, lifestyle, genetic factors, and vascular factors. Only English-language articles were included. Relevant studies were screened by title, abstract, and full text, and duplicates were removed. Finding: The current review identifies a multifactorial etiology of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), categorized into modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors. Conclusion: Alzheimer's disease is a multifactorial disorder arising from the complex interplay of non-modifiable factors and a wide array of modifiable risk factors. Consequently, while a definitive treatment remains elusive, mitigating these modifiable risk factors offers a promising strategy to delay clinical onset and reduce the global burden of the disease.
